Graduate Reading Program
Advising
Always talk to a Reading advisor before beginning your program and before taking electives.
For general questions about the program, contact Dr. Wilma Kuhlman, wkuhlman@unomaha.edu (402) 554-3926.
Advising flags: New students will not be able to register for classes until their advising flag is removed. This is to ensure that you have talked with an advisor before enrolling in classes. After you have done this, request that your advisor has your flag removed. (NOTE: You will not be able to reigster if you have completed 12 hours in teacher educaton courses without completing your selective retention application. Obtain this packet from the Graduate Clerical Assistant in KH 514 or online http://coe.unomaha.edu/ted/gradreading/selectiveretention.php)
General coursework advice: We recommend that you take TED 9100 Theories and Processes of Reading early in your program. If possible, it should be your first course. We recommend that you take TED 8010 Introduction to Research after you have taken at least 2-3 literacy courses. Pay attention to courses that have prerequisites and to courses that are only offered during one semester. Plan your program to account for prerequisites and course offerings.
Non-Thesis and Thesis Options: You may complete your master’s degree by successfully completing 36 hours of coursework: 27 of these hours ( classes) are required; 9 hours (3 classes) are electives. Electives must be approved by your advisor. Students choosing the thesis option take 30 hours of coursework plus 6 hours of thesis. The thesis and degree completion requirements are explained under “Exit Alternatives.”
