Awards, Honors, and Scholarships

 

A wide range of awards, honors, and scholarships have been established for teacher preparation candidates to recognize excellent high school achievement of incoming freshman and exceptional scholastic performance of upper classmen already attending UNO.

The scholarship application is an ongoing process. The COE priority scholarship deadline for new students entering in the fall semester is April 1 of each year. Students must have a FAFSA application on file through the Financial Aid Office. (http://www.ses.unomaha.edu/finaid/)

Please submit your resume and essay to be considered for any or all of these awards, honors, and scholarships. Your application materials should be stapled in the upper left hand corner. Do not place materials in a folder, binder, protective sheet or cover. If you have any questions please feel free to call the Office of Student Services at (402) 554-2717.

*** Please Note: Keep a copy of your files. Update your scholarship every year. Old applications will be discarded every year at the deadline date.

The essay should not be more than 200 words. This written statement should include your personal goals, professional philosophy and the impact you hope to have in the classroom.

Awards and Honors:

OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD - UNDERGRADUATE: This award will be presented to an undergraduate student in each major program area who has demonstrated a high level of personal service in the major in at least two of the following areas: service to the university, service to the College of Education, service to the community, or service to the profession. The undergraduate applicant must have completed 60 hours and have at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA.

UNIVERSITY HONORS CONVOCATION AWARD: This award is presented to one undergraduate student in each major program area who displays a combination of outstanding scholastic achievement and demonstrated leadership on campus and in the community. The award is presented at the Honors Convocation and the recipient's name is included in the convocation program. The recipient competes with other College of Education recipients for the Dean's Award. The Dean's award recipients from all colleges compete for the Vice Chancellor's Award.

Scholarships:

BOB ACKERMAN: Open to teacher preparation candidates majoring in elementary, secondary, or special education. The scholarship is awarded during the student teaching semester.

PAUL ACKERSON: Open to teacher preparation candidates majoring in secondary mathematics education. Applicants must have sophomore, junior or senior standing.

HELEN ELLIOTT: Open to teacher preparation candidate majoring in elementary education with a specialization in early childhood education. The scholarship is open to freshman through seniors.

CLARA HENDRICKS: Open to elementary, secondary, or special education teacher preparation candidates with endorsement area in special education. Candidates must have a GPA of 3.0, can be full or part-time, and have Junior or Senior standing.

M/M JOHNSON: Open to teacher preparation candidates who have earned 90 hours or more with cumulative GPA of 3.0 and enrolled as full time student. Candidates must be Nebraska residents, have a FAFSA on file with the UNO Financial Aid Office, and be student teaching during the year of the award. The recipient may not hold other scholarships during the award year. Applicants with professionally related activities will be given preference.

LINDA P. KRAUSE: Open to teacher preparation candidates in elementary education. The award is for the spring student teaching semester.

DORIS E. LORIMOR: Open to all teacher preparation candidates with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.  The award is for the fall or spring semester of student teaching..

MACALLISTER SCHOLARS: Open to minority or underrepresented teacher preparation candidates majoring in elementary, secondary, or special education. The scholarship is open to freshman through seniors.

NEAFUS GENERAL: Open to students pursuing teaching or other careers offered through the College of Education. The scholarship is open to students in the freshman through senior level. Selection is based on GPA, completion of PPST, leadership, community involvement need, etc.

NEAFUS MINORITY: Open to students pursuing teaching careers in elementary, secondary, or special education. The scholarship is open to students in the freshman through senior level. Selection is based on GPA, completion of PPST, leadership, community involvement, need, etc.

NORTHERN NATURAL GAS COMPANY: Open to minority and under represented teacher preparation candidates majoring in elementary, secondary or special education. The scholarship is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors with passing PPST scores and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

PATRICIA LYNN CHRISTIE: Open to teacher preparation candidates preparing for a teaching career in deaf education.

TALENT SCHOLARSHIP: Open to freshman students majoring in a program of study offered in the College of Education.

CORNHUSKER CHAPTER 3 OF TELEPHONE PIONEERS: Open to undergraduate students in the College of Education specializing in Special Education

DEL WEBER: Open to College of Education minority students who have completed the PPST and are taking profession sequence courses. This scholarship is awarded by the UNO Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.

DR. HOLLIE BETHEL: Open to candidates preparing to teach elementary education (grades K-6). Applicants must be at junior or senior level.
