Exercise Science Concentration
Undergraduate Program

 

The exercise science program in physical education is designed to prepare students to assume positions as fitness or health promotion directors and exercise consultants in private or public agencies, health centers, cardiac rehabilitation programs, as well as corporate fitness programs.

Job opportunities for exercise science majors include the following:

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Worksite Fitness/Wellness

Personal Training

Management of Fitness Clubs

Community Fitness (e.g., YMCA)

Hospital Based Fitness & Wellness

Strength & Conditioning Specialist

Sports Industry & Equipment

Appropriate for students in the pre-professional programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy and medicine.

Based on the goals and objectives of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).

A non-teaching degree aimed at preparing students for certification by the ACSM.

The practical experience for a student in exercise science consists of practicum opportunities in the various laboratories as well as an off campus internship. Experiences include opportunities in fitness evaluation, writing exercise prescriptions, and supervision of exercise programs for normal and special populations.

Practical experience in the administration of wellness and health promotion activities and programs is also provided. The internship consists of a minimum of 300 hours in one semester at a corporate, commercial, hospital or agency program selected by the student in consultation with the internship coordinator.

Students must have a cumulative and major GPA of at least 2.5, no grade lower than "C" in required courses, and no incomplete in required courses to do an internship and be recommended for graduation.
