HPER Building
Proposed Expansion/Renovation
The Board of Regents has approved the program statement for HPER Building Renovation.
Focused specifically on student recreation and student-focused programs, the expansion builds
new space for dedicated recreation activities, student health and beneficial expansion of programs
supporting these student services. This project also focuses important energy and resource
on integration of new and existing spaces.

Recreation and Leisure Studies
Recreational Trail Usage Grant
Dr. Donald Greer received a $5,500 grant to study Omaha area recreational trail usage. The study will
survey
all Omaha trails; three Recreation Administration graduates will be conducting the surveys from
June to September. Grantors are City of Omaha, National Park Service and the Papio-Missouri River NRD.
In 2001, Dr. Greer completed a 98-page study looking at the impact of rural rail trails for three trails
in Nebraska and one in Iowa. To view that report, click here.

Dr. Jennifer White (Assistant Professor, Fitness & Wellness Management) was reported as receiving
a grant award for the program "Community Collaboration with Alegent for Childhood Obesity Prevention",
sponsored by Alegent Health.
Women Bound to Be Active, a new website promoting skill development, educationand social support for women to take charge of their lives and to maintain healthy, active lifestyles through skill development, education, and social support. Dr. Nicholas Stergiou (Associate Professor, Biomechanics Lab) received a grant
for the study entitled,
"Assessing the ambulatory disability incurred by peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
and the effect of revascularization utilizing advanced biomechanical techniques and functional outcomes"
sponsored by UNMC.
HPER Biomechanics Lab to Feature Talk on Robot-Assisted Surgery
Dr. Allison Okamura, associate professor of mechanical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University,
will speak at UNO Friday, Aug. 24. Her presentation, "Haptics for Robot-Assisted Surgery," begins at
2 p.m. in 206 Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building. The event is free and open to the
university community. There will be a reception for all participants in the HPER Biomechanics Laboratory

Kris Berg, health, physical education and recreation, has been named the 2008 Alliance Scholar by
the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Dance (AAHPERD) for his pivotal research
in exercise physiology. AAHPERD is offering a Web conference presentation on November 1, 2007, from
Noon
– 1:30 pm EST, featuring the Alliance Scholar for 2007-08, Dr. Kris Berg,
professor and director of the Exercise Physiology Lab at the University of

Dr. Jessica Meendering has received
the 2007 Nebraska American Physiological Society
Young Investigator Award. Meendering's research focuses on current women’s health issues,
particularly integrative cardiovascular regulation in women. Dr. Meendering earned her Doctorate and
Masters degrees in Human Physiology from the University of Oregon, Eugene.
The Moving Company kicks off its 2007-2008 season at the Joslyn Library and at the
Omaha Public Library.
