Health Education Undergraduate Program
Community Health Education Concentration

The Community Health Educator is prepared to start a career as a health promoter or educator in community, school, worksite and/or medical care settings. The program provides opportunities for the student to:

  • Become a reflective practitioner in health education

  • Develop critical thinking on health issues

  • Sharpen health-directed communication skills

  • Advance health-related technological competence

Community health educators maintain an overall public health perspective while developing specific competencies in assessing individual and community needs for health education in the planning, implementing, and evaluation of health education programs. They act as resource professionals in coordination and communicating health education services.

Along with the 45 hours of general education requirements and a practicum, the community health education major completes 64 hours of course work. Some ares of study are:

 

Foundations of Heath Education Physiology of Exercise
Introduction of Nutrition Community Health
Drug Awareness Stress Management
Introduction to Mass Communications Principles of Management
Microcomputer Applications Methods and Materials in Health Education
Small Group Communication Health Education: Planning & Organization
Introduction to Statistics Managerial Leadership
Organizational Change Field Practicum (Practical experience)

 

A degree in Community Health Education prepares students for entry level positions with agencies and organizations in the community whose mission is to improve the health of the public through education and advocacy. Starting salaries for Community Health Graduates could be anywhere in the range of $20-$30,000. Graduates of the program are or have been employed by some of the following:
