Graduate Program - Admission Process

 

Admission Process

 

  1. Prerequisites: Fulfill undergraduate deficiencies with a "C" or better.

(PE 4010 Laboratory Methods in Exercise Science may be taken after admission for undergradaute credit. All other prerequisite courses must be completed or in progress to apply.)

 

  1. Fill out application for Graduate College
    1. Submit UNO Graduate Application including $45.00 application fee (applications obtained from UNO Graduate office or online at:
      http://www.unomaha.edu/graduate/AdmissionRequirements.php)
      Students may apply and pay online.
    2. Arrange to have official transcripts forwarded to the UNOmaha Office of Graduate Studies. Transcripts must be received prior to the application deadline. Hand carried or student submitted credentials are not acceptable.
    3. Applicants are required to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 to apply for provisional admission. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is required for unconditional admission.
    4. Applicants are required to take and submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). A minimum combined score of 800 for the qualitative and quantitative sections is required. However, the Athletic Training Program recommends a combined score of 1,000 for the qualitative and quantitative sections in order for the applicant to be considered as a strong candidate for admission. The applicant must arrange to have GRE results forwarded to the UNO Office of Graduate Studies. Scores must be received prior to the application deadline of Feb. 1, 2008 .
    5. **International students should use the International Student Application Form available from the Office of International Studies & Programs. See international admissions requirements on Page 8 of Graduate Catalog or online Graduate Catalog. International applicants are recommended to have a TOEFL score of 550 or higher in order to be considered a strong candidate for admission.
    6. Fill out Graduate Athletic Training Program application and recommendation forms.
    7. Applications may be obtained from the School of Health Physical Education and Recreation or are available online at: http://www.unocoe.unomaha.edu/hper/at/grad_application.php
    8. Students must have at least 25 hours of observation/volunteer experience with a Certified Athletic Trainer prior to applying. Please include the name and phone number of the ATC you observed on your application.
    9. Include completed recommendation forms. Person signing recommendation form must seal form in an envelope and sign across the flap of the envelope prior to returning the form to you.
    10. Be sure to include e-mail address, as communication will occur via e-mail.
    11. Submit all materials to:

      All materials must be submitted prior to February 1, 2008 for admission July, 2008.

 

  1. Applications will be reviewed after February 1, 2008 . Only completed files will be reviewed. Transcripts will be reviewed by the Chair of the Athletic Training Admission Committee. Overall GPA and GPA in prerequisite courses are calculated. Applicants not meeting the minimum GPA or course requirements are notified and removed from applicant pool.

 

  1. Applications are reviewed by members of the Athletic Training Admission Committee. Applicants are scored on GPA, application completeness, volunteer or work experience, leadership ability, memberships in professional organizations, certifications and references. A pre-interview score is determined. Applicants will be notified as to whether or not they have been selected to receive a personal interview no later than Feb. 15, 2008. Interviews for 2008-2009 are March 1, 2008, from 8:30am-12:00pm at UNO. Not everyone who meets GPA qualifications will be granted an interview.

 

  1. The Athletic Training Program may not accept a student even though he/she has been admitted to the Graduate College. The Graduate College Admission process is non-competitive and all students whom have met minimal criteria are admitted. See Graduate Catalog. The Athletic Training Program is required to use a competitive selection process, therefore, not all students who have met the criteria will be admitted.

 

  1. Applicants selected for admission are notified in writing and must accept the position in writing within 2 weeks of notification. Declined positions may be filled from the alternate list as needed.

 

  1. Applicants must meet technical standards in order to be considered for admission. Students who feel they may be unable to meet the technical standards should contact the UNO Services for Students with Disabilities to determine what accommodations may be available. Final admissions will require the student to complete and document the following:

    1. Physical Examination by MD, DO, or Nurse Practitioner. This may be done by your physician at home or may be done at UNO Student Health Services.
    2. Proof of vaccinations is required prior to admission. Vaccination proof required for tetanus inoculation (within the last five years), rubella, mumps and polio or documentation of having the diseases. Students must also show evidence of immune titer to varicella (chicken pox) or history of previously having the disease. Students are strongly encouraged to obtain the Hepatitis B vaccine. Any student electing not to be vaccinated for Hepatitis B will be required to sign a waiver.
    3. Show evidence of current certification in Standard First Aid & Adult CPR/AED. Students are required to maintain these certifications throughout the entire academic program.

 

  1. Starting date for accepted students is early July, 2008.
